Killings spark riots in city

KARACHI: The killing of Baloch nationalist leaders by unidentified people in Balochistan on Thursday sparked riots in Baloch-dominated parts of the city, completely halting daily activities. The areas where riots broke out were Lyari Town, Malir, Al-Falah, Quaidabad, Sharafi Goth, Gulistan-e-Johar, Manghopir, Dalmia, Drigh Road, Jamshed Quarters, Old Golimar, Garden, Pak Colony, Mauripur, Hub River Road, Baldia Town, and Saeedabad. The riots caused massive traffic jams in various parts of the city and three people, including a woman, were injured in different areas. In Pak Colony, a passerby, Sardar Khan, sustained bullet injuries when unidentified armed men opened fire, while his wife, Zareena, and a police constable Wazir Khan were also wounded as the angry mob pelted stones on police personnel and the pedestrians. Aerial firing by miscreants in various localities created panic amongst the area residents. Over five dozen vehicles were damaged in the riots, while the protestors also burnt tyres and blocked main roads, resulting in traffic jams that lasted for three to four hours. According to reports gathered from the different localities, around 2,000 law enforcers were deputed immediately on the directives of high-ups in the affected areas. However, despite the efforts, police was unable to control the situation and traffic jams lasting three to four hours were witnessed. Moreover, thousands of angry people staged demonstrations in several parts of the city. The protestors chanted slogans in favor of the murdered Baloch leaders and against the government. The protestors said that the incident showed the failure of the government and demanded the arrest of the culprits involved
